Selecting a Standard I.D. Burnishing Tool

There are three basic body designs in the Monaghan Burnishing Tool Line. This allows the tools within each basic design to be sized for different applications by changing a minimum number of parts.

Each tool size can be adjusted within its given diameter range. Each tool overlaps the next size. Where two tools sizes overlap, the larger tool should be chosen.

On tool sizes .187" to 1.187", the diameter of the housing exceeds the diameter of the roller burnishing head. Therefore, the maximum burnishing length is restricted by the tool length. Tools are available in longer reaches.

On tools for hole diameters of 1.218" and larger, the housing is smaller than the entry diameter of the tool. The maximum burnishable length is dependent upon the length of the shank. A shank extension can be used to increase the maximum burnishing length.

The roll cavities for through hole tools are designed with self-feed cages with a slight helix angle to the axis of the mandrel and work-piece. The angular relationship creates a self-feeding characteristic in the tool. When the machine is equipped with automatic feed, the machine feed must be adjusted so that the tool is not retarded.

Self-feeding tools should not be used for close approaches to shoulders or in full bottoming applications. The full bottoming tool has a non-feed cage design. The roll cavities axes are parallel to the axis of the mandrel. The tool releases by reversing the machine feed and withdrawing the tool.
